Here is a great modern day History Teacher's website who uses all the techniques stated above. He cares about the students learning the material to keep for the long run, not just to memorize facts and battles for one test. The tests he gives are based on essays and supporting documents that allow students to confidently share what they know about the topic with S.F.I. (Specific, Factual, Information.) In order to better understand history, I believe it should be taught in a hands on way that explores the ways of the past, not just study them. For example, when learning about the propaganda posters and how they were utilized in World War I, we created actual posters ourselves to help us better understand the concept. Document Based Questions are also utilized in his class to help students understand history from a different angle. Maps, photographs, quotes, and political cartoons are examples of documents that are used along with questions about them, on tests.

How is art utilized in history?

Political cartoons and propaganda posters from World War I are two ways art has been utilized in history. These two forms or art have been preserved and are now used in the classroom to help students learn more about WWI from an alternative perspective. Art gives us a chance to look at history in a different, more realistic way.
