Linking Question: What role does loaded language play when talking about historical events?

This question links history with language. They language used when recording history is very important.

Lets use the Civil War as an example.

When reading about the Civil War it is easy to tell which side of the war people were on. Most of the recorded history we use today when studying the Civil War is from the Yankee's point of view. When they talk about or refer to the Confederates, they use loaded words like 'rebel'.

The reason rebel is a loaded word is because when we hear that word we associate it with other things. When people think of rebel they think of unorganized, violent, unruly, ignorant groups of people.

This makes people learning about the Civil War think of the Confederates as the bad guys. However they were none of these things. They were fighting for their rights just as the men in the Revolutionary War had.

However because the north won they were the people who recorded the history. Reading newspaper articles and letters sent during the war refer to the Confederates as rebels which is a loaded word and leads us to assume things about the Confederates that may not be true.
