History is based on primary sources, but since they are a selective interpretation of events, they cannot always be taken at face value.

This is absolutely true. History is written by the victorious. However, they cannot be taken at face value, because the stories are indeed primary sources, they also have opinions and biases. For example, the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam war. This is arguably where “America” decided to pull her forces out. Why? The Tet Offensive was a coordinated attack made by the Vietcong at multiple different cities in southern Vietnam on the American and southern Vietnamese militaries during the lunar new year of “Tet”. This siege, from some accounts, is technically considered a strategic failure of the Vietcong – the Vietcong has sustained heavy losses. However, back home (America), the media and news coverage had made this seem like a sweeping and decided victory for the Vietcong. This may not be the reason for the American withdrawal of Vietnam, however, this is a case where this question reins true.
